To sit for the National Board Exam, all health and wellness coaches are required to provide a log of 50 health and wellness coaching sessions that meet the following criteria.

NBHWC Approved Training Programs have different requirements as to when the coaching log sessions may begin. Please verify the date in which you can begin your coaching log with your NBHWC Approved Training Program.

  • Sessions must be dated after you pass a Practical Skills Assessment (PSA) within an NBHWC Approved Training Program.  Exact start date must be verified by the NBHWC Approved Training Program.
  • Each coaching session must be a minimum of 20 minutes in duration. Sessions over 20 minutes count as one session.
  • 75% of each coaching session must be devoted to coaching facilitation and not education.
  • Coaching sessions may not be with friends, family or current classmates.
  • Coaching sessions can be paid or pro bono.
  • Group coaching sessions count as one session.
  • Coaching may be facilitated in person, by phone or using live interactive technology (an example would be Zoom or Facetime).
    • Text-based coaching sessions are not eligible to submit toward the coaching log.

Each coaching session on your log must include:

  • Full date (MM/DD/YYYY) of session.
  • A coded identity for your client to retain confidentiality.
  • Length of the coaching session.
  • A general overview of the topics discussed with your client.

Applicants who are limited by their employer’s regulations may submit a letter from their supervisor on company letterhead stating they have completed 50 health and wellness coaching sessions of at least 20 minutes in duration, and of which at least 75% of each session was devoted to coaching facilitation and not education. Letter must include the dates within which the most recent 50 sessions occurred in.

A coaching log extension is available. Click here for more information.
