The NBHWC Content Outline defines the core competencies, knowledge, and skills assessed on the National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) Board Exam. It serves as a framework for what examinees are expected to know.
All NBHWC Approved Training Programs are required to teach the competencies listed in the NBHWC Content Outline. Examinees should use this document to understand the scope of content covered on the exam and to ensure that their training and practical experience have prepared them in each competency area.
How to use the Content Outline
Why are updates to the Content Outline necessary?
- Review your training materials: Use the outline to confirm that you’ve learned and understand each competency taught in your NBHWC-approved training program.
- Identify areas for review: Use the outline as a checklist to guide your study and ensure you are prepared across all competency areas assessed on the exam.
The Content Outline is not a curriculum or study guide. It serves as a framework for the knowledge and skills assessed on the exam.
Trained before 2026?
If you completed your training prior to 2026, download the Content Outline Crosswalk to review updates and ensure you’re familiar with all current competencies. NBHWC does not provide materials to learn the updated competencies.
