Insights into the Transtheoretical Model of Change in Practice

Content Area:

Competency 2: Theories, Models, and Approaches to Behavior Change – 2.2 Transtheoretical Model of Change (Stages of Change)

Event Description:

Join us for an insightful session on the Transtheoretical Model of Change (TTM) and its practical application in coaching. This event will explore how stage-appropriate interventions reduce frustration, prevent burnout, and redefine what success truly looks like in behavior change work. Coaches will walk away with a clearer, more sustainable approach that honors client autonomy while strengthening their own professional well-being.

Attendees Will Learn:

  • Respecting client autonomy and protecting practitioner wellbeing are two sides of the same coin.
  • Stage-mismatched interventions are a driver of professional frustration and even burnout because they create repeated experiences of “failure”.
  • Success is not moving through the stages—you’re not failing if a client in precontemplation doesn’t change behavior; you may be succeeding at exactly what that stage requires.
  • Stage-appropriate goals and responses describe what “effective practice” means—collaborating on different goal types at different stages is important.
  • You cannot control whether clients change, but you can control whether your practice is sustainable. The TTM shifts your focus from outcomes you can’t control to processes you can control.
