    Katherine Smith, MPH, NBC-HWC

    Ms. Smith is a professor with the Health and Wellness Coaching and Health Promotion Departments at Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) where has been teaching health promotion, behavior change, motivational interviewing and meditation for five years. She was recently awarded MUIH’s 2021 Excellende in Research and Scholarship Award. Ms.Smith is a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) as well as an International Coaching Federation Associate Certified Coach (ACC). In that capacity, she works on a multi-year contract to train Veterans Administration staff around the country to be health and wellness coaches. Ms. Smith is also a Senior Trainer and Virginia Liaison for MINDS (Mindfulness in DC Area Schools), a local organization that brings mindfulness into public and private schools in Washington, D.C., MD, And VA. Additionally, Ms. Smith is a mind-body practitioner and researcher, and has facilitated mind-body and behavior change course(s) for medical and graduate-level students at Georgetown University School of Medicine, George Washington University, University of Michigan Medical School, Meharry Medical College, and Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS). She received her Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the University of Michigan and has a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Duke University. Her MPH focused on program development, program evaluation, and quantitative/qualitative research methods, as well as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

    Ms. Smith completed her coach training at Wellcoaches and the Vanderbilt Health Coaching Program. A meditator for 27 years, Ms. Smith received clinical training in mind-body relaxation from the Mind-Body Medical Institute at Harvard University Medical School; advanced training in Motivational Interviewing from the University of Michigan; has completed the first two levels of the University of Massachusetts Professional Training Program in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR); and finished the Mindful Schools K-12 Curriculum Training. She has taught mindfulness and other mind-body skills to multiple populations, including children, adults, Native Americans, members of the military, corporate executives, healthcare clinicians, and Members of Congress and their staff. She was awarded a University of Michigan Dean’s Office Scholarship; Alpha Delta Pi Academic Scholarship Awards for academic excellence at Duke University; and is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

    An avid reader, runner, and outdoor enthusiast, Ms. Smith lives in Arlington, VA with her husband and two teenage daughters.
